Chapter Six

Silas

I'll never be more grateful for an overdue library book. I found it under a stack of papers I was grading and decided to return it to the library before it closed. I was on my way there when I saw that... that motherfucker pinning Jane to the wall, even as she screamed for help. My stomach churned with nausea and anger at the sight of it.

If she hadn't broken me out of my trance, I would have killed him. And I doubted I ever would have regretted it.

I hugged her close, needing to feel that she was safe. "Let's go home," I said.

I took her to my car, and we drove home. She curled up in the passenger seat. Her trembling had finally stopped, but her face was so pale, and it made the tear stains stand out even more. My heart ached seeing her like this. More than anything, I wanted to make her feel better.

Once we got to my house, she dragged herself out of the car. I stopped her and picked her up. "You can just relax tonight, darling," I whispered.

She nodded and buried her face in my chest. I swallowed. She felt so vulnerable and fragile, but me calling her darling hadn't even phased her. The pet-name just kept slipping out around her. I wasn't toeing the line of professionalism anymore. I had completely crossed it.

I carried her into the house and set her down on the couch. "I'll get water heated for tea and then I'll draw you a bath," I said.

"Professor?" she said, her voice quiet. "Could you sit with me for a while?"

I hesitated. If I sat with her, I would want to kiss her and do even more. But that was the last thing I should do. She was scared. I shouldn't exploit that.

But it was impossible to resist her when she looked up at me with those wide eyes. I sat down next to her on the couch and she curled up into my lap like a Little clinging to her Daddy. I closed my eyes, savoring the feeling. I put my arms around her shoulder.

"You're going to get in trouble, won't you?" she said. "You punched a student."

"I saved a student. He can try to report me, but I'll tell them what really happened." I traced circles on her shoulder. "I'm more worried about you right now," I said.

"It was scary," she said. "But I'm okay. You saved me before anything bad happened." Her voice shook just slightly.

I held her closer. "You don't have to put on a brave face for me, darling."

She sighed. "I don't want you to see me as immature, though."

I stayed silent for a second, not sure what to say. She was coming dangerously close to saying she was attracted to me. But she was upset. I didn't want her to regret saying anything. "You're a strong woman, Jane," I said. "But that doesn't mean you don't need someone to take care of you now and then.
